ASUU Gives 20 Universities 14-Day Ultimatum, Threatens Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has directed lecturers in 20 universities to prepare for industrial action over alleged failure by the Federal and state governments to fully implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement.

ASUU gave the affected governments and university authorities a 14-day ultimatum to resolve the outstanding issues, warning that its branches would commence strike action if their demands are not met.

The decision was reached at the union’s National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026.

ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, saying an emergency NEC meeting would be held at the end of August or early September to review the situation.

The affected universities are:

• Nasarawa State University, Keffi
• Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai
• University of Medical Sciences, Ondo
• Gombe State University
• Plateau State University, Bokkos
• Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba
• Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma
• Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa
• Abia State University, Uturu
• University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa
• Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo
• Kaduna State University
• Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil
• Northwest University, Kano
• Enugu State University of Science and Technology
• Imo State University
• Niger Delta University
• University of Africa, Toru-Orua
• Bayelsa Medical University
• Taraba State University, Jalingo

The union accused the Federal Government of failing to release the required subvention for the full implementation of the 2025 agreement, describing its implementation as “haphazard.”

ASUU also alleged that some state governments had failed to implement provisions of the agreement in their universities.

The 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement was signed after years of negotiations and includes a 40 per cent increase in academic staff remuneration, improved research funding and allowances, as well as measures to improve staff welfare and university infrastructure.

ASUU said the affected branches would begin strike action immediately after the 14-day ultimatum expires if the outstanding issues remain unresolved.

The union’s latest warning raises the possibility of another disruption to academic activities in public universities.
