Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji, accused of involvement in an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has said his actions were motivated by patriotism and concern over Nigeria’s worsening condition.
Ma’aji said economic hardship, poor governance and the welfare of Nigerians and military personnel influenced his concerns about the country’s direction.
According to Premium Times, the colonel made the remarks while discussing the allegations against him.
He said Nigeria was experiencing a gradual decline and was “almost at the point of collapse,” adding that his concerns were driven by his desire for a more prosperous country.
Ma’aji also raised concerns about the welfare of soldiers, particularly those wounded during military operations, alleging that some injured personnel receiving treatment at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna were not receiving adequate care.
He said the alleged plan involved mobilising military officers who shared his concerns but maintained that the group had not reached the stage of carrying out any operation before his arrest.
Ma’aji further alleged that Nigeria was becoming a “banana republic” and argued that the country was on a dangerous trajectory.
He is among the military officers accused of being involved in an alleged plot against the Tinubu administration.
