The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved restrictions on commercial motorcycles (Okada) and tricycles (Keke Napep) in parts of Abuja over security concerns, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has announced.
Speaking at a media parley in Abuja, Wike said the FCT Security Council approved the restriction after concluding the vehicles had become more than a nuisance. “Just this morning, I signed the approval. We agreed it’s not just causing nuisance but a security threat,” he said, adding that a full ban across the entire FCT would be difficult to enforce.
He said security agencies have been directed to map out central city districts where the vehicles will be barred, while efforts continue to clear illegal encampments in areas like Karmajiji in Kukwaba District. He urged residents to be patient as enforcement expands.
On other matters, Wike said a committee has been set up to check dangerous car racing in residential areas, and gave updates on FCTA projects, including completed infrastructure at the Apo Mechanic Traders’ relocation site in Wasa District, with a Memorandum of Understanding being finalised before land titles are issued.
He also urged residents who obtained land through Area Councils to regularise their titles, citing a Supreme Court ruling that vests FCT land authority in the FCTA, noting he has signed 5,000 to 6,000 such regularisations. On infrastructure, he pointed to the newly commissioned Abuja City Gate and planned private-sector redevelopment of Life Camp Recreation Centre and Jabi Lake Recreational Park.
