Professor Is-haq Oloyede has officially handed over the leadership of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to Professor Segun Aina, bringing to an end a decade-long tenure marked by sweeping reforms in Nigeria’s admissions system.
The handover ceremony took place on Friday following the appointment of Aina by President Bola Tinubu as the new Registrar of JAMB.
The appointment was earlier announced by the Presidency through the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the new registrar was selected to build on the reforms introduced under Oloyede’s administration.
Professor Aina is a distinguished Computer Engineering scholar at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, with extensive experience in digital infrastructure, examination technology, institutional reforms and information systems.
He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, United Kingdom, a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University. He also completed the Senior Management Programme at the Lagos Business School.
According to the Presidency, Aina has spent more than 15 years advising federal and state governments on digital transformation, public sector reforms and the design of technology-driven systems.
His professional experience also includes consultancy roles with major examination bodies such as the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), where he contributed to the development of ICT systems and measures aimed at strengthening examination integrity.
The Presidency described Aina as one of Nigeria’s youngest professors of Computer Engineering, noting that he would also become the youngest Registrar in the history of JAMB.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that the new registrar would sustain and expand the gains recorded under Oloyede, particularly in the areas of transparency, digital innovation and operational efficiency.
Oloyede leaves office after ten years at the helm of JAMB, during which the examination body underwent major reforms, including the adoption of technology-driven examination processes, tighter measures against examination malpractice, increased transparency in admissions and significant improvements in revenue generation and accountability.
His administration also introduced several innovations aimed at restoring public confidence in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and strengthening the credibility of Nigeria’s tertiary admission system.
With Professor Aina now assuming office, expectations are high that JAMB will continue its digital transformation agenda while enhancing examination security, improving service delivery and consolidating ongoing reforms in the country’s higher education admissions process.
