The Oyo State Government has inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction of pupils and teachers from Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area.

The Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, announced the development in a statement issued in Ibadan, describing the move as part of the government’s commitment to uncovering the facts behind the incident and strengthening security across the state.

According to the commissioner, the panel will investigate the sequence of events that led to the kidnapping, identify lapses that may have contributed to the security breach, and assess the response of security agencies and other relevant authorities during the crisis.

The commission has also been mandated to recommend practical measures aimed at preventing future attacks on schools and rural communities, with a focus on improving emergency response, intelligence gathering and the protection of vulnerable areas.

Oyelade said the commission, which is scheduled to be inaugurated on Friday, will conduct an independent and comprehensive investigation to ensure accountability and provide a roadmap for enhancing public safety.

The judicial panel follows the abduction of pupils and teachers from Esinele and Yawota communities on May 15. The victims were eventually rescued after spending 56 days in captivity.

The Oyo State Government expressed confidence that the commission’s findings would guide future security reforms and reinforce efforts to safeguard educational institutions and communities from similar incidents.
