Eddie Howe has stepped down as manager of Newcastle United, bringing an end to a five-year tenure at St James’ Park, according to reports by the BBC and Sky Sports.
The 48-year-old took charge of the Magpies in November 2021, replacing Steve Bruce, and oversaw one of the club’s most successful periods in recent history.
Under Howe, Newcastle ended a decades-long wait for major silverware by winning the League Cup in March 2025, securing the club’s first major trophy since 1969. He also guided the team to UEFA Champions League qualification in both the 2022/23 and 2024/25 seasons.
Despite those achievements, pressure mounted on Howe during the 2025/26 campaign after Newcastle endured a disappointing Premier League season, finishing 12th following 17 defeats in 38 matches.
The club has also faced significant squad changes in recent weeks, with midfielder Sandro Tonali joining Tottenham Hotspur and England international Anthony Gordon completing a move to Barcelona. Uncertainty also remains over the future of club captain Bruno Guimarães, who continues to attract transfer interest.
Howe’s final game in charge ended in disappointment as Newcastle suffered a 4-1 defeat to Championship side Bristol City in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.
Neither Newcastle United nor Howe had immediately issued an official statement on the reported departure at the time of filing.
