The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has called on the Nigeria Police Force to intensify efforts to combat energy theft and the vandalism of critical power infrastructure across the country.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where both parties agreed to strengthen collaboration aimed at protecting Nigeria’s power infrastructure and improving energy security.
Speaking during the meeting, the minister described energy theft and the destruction of electrical installations as major challenges affecting the nation’s electricity supply. He stressed that safeguarding power assets is essential to ensuring a more stable and reliable power system.
Tegbe urged the police to increase surveillance around critical power facilities, intensify enforcement operations, and take decisive action against individuals involved in vandalism and electricity theft.
In response, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protecting critical national infrastructure. He assured the ministry that the police would continue working to enhance energy security and ensure that those responsible for crimes against the power sector are identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
Nigeria continues to face significant challenges from the vandalism of power infrastructure and widespread energy theft, resulting in billions of naira in annual losses, damage to electricity facilities, and disruptions to power supply across the country. The renewed partnership between the Ministry of Power and the Nigeria Police Force is expected to strengthen efforts to curb these crimes and improve the reliability of the national electricity grid.
