Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed reports claiming she filed for divorce, describing the publication as false and misleading.
In a statement posted on her verified X account on Friday, Okwu-Kanu said she had become aware of online reports alleging that she had initiated divorce proceedings against her husband.
She categorically denied the claim, stating that she had not filed for divorce and urged the public to disregard the reports.
“The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she said.
Okwu-Kanu expressed concern over what she described as the growing spread of fabricated stories about her family, noting that such unverified reports undermine responsible journalism and mislead the public.
She urged members of the public to rely only on information released directly by her or through her authorised representatives and appreciated those who sought clarification before sharing the reports.
Nnamdi Kanu, whom she married in 2009, is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025.
The IPOB leader was convicted on seven counts and sentenced to life imprisonment on five of the charges, alongside additional prison terms on two other counts, with all sentences ordered to run concurrently.
He has since appealed the judgment, filing a notice of appeal before the Court of Appeal in February 2026, seeking to overturn his conviction.
