The Oyo State Government has issued a seven-day notice to relatives and next-of-kin of unclaimed bodies deposited in public hospital mortuaries across the state to come forward for identification and collection, after which the remains will be given a mass burial.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said the decision was necessitated by a significant increase in the number of unclaimed bodies in public health facilities across the state.

According to her, the bodies were brought to the mortuaries by the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Correctional Service, and other relevant agencies.

Ajetunmobi explained that many of the bodies have remained unclaimed for extended periods, leading to congestion in several mortuaries, some of which have reached their storage capacities.

She urged members of the public, particularly those with missing relatives, to visit the affected public hospital mortuaries for identification and possible claim of the bodies.

The commissioner stated that arrangements are being concluded for the mass burial of the unclaimed bodies after the expiration of the seven-day notice.

She noted that the notice is intended to provide adequate opportunity for relatives and other concerned persons to identify and claim the remains before the burial exercise.

Ajetunmobi reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining public health standards and ensuring the efficient management of healthcare facilities across Oyo State.
