The Federal Government has said Nigeria’s future prosperity, economic competitiveness and efficient public service delivery will depend largely on the effective deployment of digital technology.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, made the declaration on Wednesday while opening the Digital Transformation Summit 2026 in Abuja.

The summit, organised by Galaxy Backbone Limited to mark its 20th anniversary, brought together government officials, technology experts and industry stakeholders to discuss strategies for advancing digital governance and innovation in Nigeria.

Akume, who also chairs the Board of Directors of Galaxy Backbone, described digital innovation as a critical driver of national development, calling for stronger collaboration among the federal, state and local governments to accelerate the country’s digital transformation agenda.

He said Galaxy Backbone has grown over the past two decades into a strategic national asset by providing digital infrastructure, cloud services, connectivity, cybersecurity solutions and secure networks that support government operations nationwide.

According to the SGF, President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda places digital transformation at the centre of efforts to improve institutional efficiency, transparency, innovation, inclusion and economic growth.

Akume stressed that achieving a digitally driven future requires sustained investment in infrastructure, innovation, partnerships and institutions capable of delivering services efficiently at scale.

He urged state governments, ICT agencies and public institutions to maximise existing digital infrastructure and strengthen collaboration to improve governance and service delivery across the country.

The SGF also commended the management and staff of Galaxy Backbone for their contributions over the past 20 years, expressing confidence that the organisation would continue to play a leading role in Nigeria’s digital development.

In his remarks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone Limited, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, described digital transformation as a key driver of economic growth, improved governance and national competitiveness.

He noted that advances in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data-driven technologies are reshaping economies globally, adding that Nigeria must continue investing in digital infrastructure to unlock opportunities for businesses, government and citizens.

Adeyanju said the country’s large population, youthful workforce and vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem position it to become a leading digital economy in Africa, stressing that digital transformation is now an economic, governance and nation-building imperative.
