The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the decision reflects the government’s recognition of the significance of the Hijrah to the Muslim community.

According to the statement, the Hijrah marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event regarded as a defining moment in Islamic history.

Oyelade said the work-free day is a gesture of respect and solidarity with Muslims across the state as they celebrate the beginning of the new Islamic calendar year.

He urged residents to use the occasion to pray for lasting peace, unity, and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria.

The commissioner also encouraged citizens to reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah, emphasizing the values of faith, sacrifice, perseverance, and communal harmony.

“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation,” Oyelade said.
