The Federal Government has announced that the long-awaited Digital Switch Over (DSO) project will commence nationwide rollout on June 17, 2026, in what officials described as a major breakthrough for Nigeria’s broadcasting industry.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this after a facility tour of the headquarters of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited in Abuja.

According to the minister, the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting will transform television broadcasting, advertising and audience measurement across Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.

He said Nigerians had waited for several years for the digital migration project, adding that the process has now been completed and is ready for official commissioning on June 17.

Idris explained that the digital switch over would provide broadcasters and advertisers with improved audience measurement systems capable of tracking viewership patterns and helping advertisers make informed decisions.

He noted that several broadcast channels had already been unbundled under the new system, which is expected to improve content delivery and increase competition among broadcasters.

According to him, the digital broadcasting platform will create better opportunities for content creators, broadcasters and advertisers while offering viewers clearer and improved television services.

The minister also stated that the project became possible through collaboration between National Broadcasting Commission, NigComSat, the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting the implementation of the project.

Idris further revealed that Nigeria’s broadcasting system would fully migrate to high-definition television shortly after the official launch of the DSO platform.

He added that the new digital broadcasting system is expected to improve television quality, strengthen competition in the industry and expand content development across the country.
