The House of Representatives has directed regulatory authorities in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector to enforce strict compliance with guidelines governing the siting of gas filling stations and outlets across the country.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Adesola Samuel Adedayo, in response to a recent gas explosion in Apapa, Lagos State.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the continued location of gas facilities within residential and commercial areas, in violation of existing safety regulations that prescribe designated zones for such operations.

According to the motion, the explosion occurred in the early hours of May 5, 2026, along Adeleye Street in Apapa, leaving five persons seriously injured and causing significant damage to nearby structures.

The lawmaker noted that the incident happened at a construction site located behind two shops, resulting in substantial material losses and injuries, including a student who was on his way to school at the time.

The House commended the swift response of residents and emergency personnel, who transported victims to medical facilities, including the Gbagada General Hospital, for urgent treatment.

Raising concerns over the recurring nature of such incidents, particularly in densely populated, low-income areas, the House called for stricter enforcement of safety standards to prevent further loss of lives and property.

The lawmakers also urged the National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant bodies to provide immediate relief materials to those affected by the explosion.

The directive underscores growing concerns about public safety and regulatory lapses in the handling of gas infrastructure nationwide.
