Eighteen lawmakers elected on the platform of the African Democratic Congress in the House of Representatives have announced their defection to other political parties.
Seventeen of the legislators moved to the National Democratic Congress, while one member, Leke Abejide, defected to the All Progressives Congress. Abejide, who chairs the House Committee on Customs and Excise, led the single defection to the ruling party.
The lawmakers attributed their decision to ongoing internal challenges within the ADC, stating that the prolonged crisis had made it difficult for them to effectively carry out their legislative duties and serve their constituents.
Those who joined the NDC include Yusuf Umar Datti, Uchenna Harrison Okonkwo, Sani Adamu Wakil, Thaddius Attah Achef, George Ozodinobi, Obiageli Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseun Sowumi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukthar Umar Zakari, George Oluwande, Murphy Omoruyi, Munachin Alozie, Emeka Idu, Jessy-Okey Onuakalusi, Peter Uzokwe, Victor Afam Ogene, and Abdulhakeem Kamilu Ado.
During plenary, the session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who made light-hearted remarks urging the lawmakers to remain consistent in their political alignments, noting that several of them had previously switched parties before joining the ADC earlier in the year.
Following the latest defections, the ADC’s representation in the House of Representatives has been significantly reduced, leaving the party with only a handful of members in the chamber.
