The Oyo State Government has approved the disbursement of bursary awards to indigenes of the state currently studying law, in a move aimed at easing the financial burden associated with legal education.

The announcement was made by the Secretary of the Oyo State Scholarship Board, Mr. Amos Akinyanju, during a briefing, where he confirmed that a total sum of ₦153,500,000 has been earmarked for distribution to qualified beneficiaries.

According to him, the bursary will benefit 307 law students from Oyo State who are part of the 2024/2025 academic session. These students are spread across the seven accredited campuses of the Nigerian Law School nationwide, reflecting the government’s commitment to supporting indigenes pursuing professional education regardless of their study location.

As part of the disbursement process, the Scholarship Board has scheduled a screening exercise to verify the eligibility of beneficiaries. The exercise is set to begin on April 27 and will run through April 30, with activities commencing at 10:00 a.m. each day. It will take place at the boardroom of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology located in Agodi, Ibadan.

A detailed timetable has been released to ensure an orderly and efficient screening process. Students from the Enugu and Yenagoa campuses are expected to appear on the first day of the exercise. This will be followed by those from Port Harcourt and Yola campuses on the second day. Candidates studying in Abuja and Kano campuses are scheduled for the third day, while those from the Lagos campus will conclude the screening on the final day.

Officials emphasized the importance of strict adherence to the schedule, urging all beneficiaries to attend on their assigned dates to avoid delays or disqualification. The screening process is expected to involve verification of academic records, proof of state origin, and other relevant documentation required to confirm eligibility for the bursary.

The initiative underscores the state government’s broader commitment to education and human capital development, particularly in supporting students in professional fields such as law, where the cost of training can be significantly high. By providing financial assistance, the government aims to reduce the pressure on students and their families while encouraging academic excellence and professional advancement.

Beneficiaries have also been advised to seek clarification through the designated contact channels provided by the Scholarship Board if they encounter any challenges or require additional information regarding the process.

Overall, the bursary programme represents a strategic intervention designed to invest in the future of Oyo State indigenes, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder access to quality legal education and professional development.
