Iran has warned it may block trade routes across key waterways, including the Red Sea, if the United States continues its naval blockade on Iranian ports.
The threat was issued by Ali Abdollahi, head of Iran’s military central command centre, in a statement broadcast on state television.
Abdollahi said continued actions by the US that disrupt Iran’s commercial shipping and oil exports could escalate tensions and undermine existing ceasefire conditions.
“The armed forces of the Islamic Republic will not allow exports or imports to continue in the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the Red Sea,” he stated, adding that Iran would act decisively to protect its sovereignty and national interests.
The warning follows the imposition of a naval blockade by the United States on Iranian ports earlier in the week, after talks between both countries failed to produce an agreement.
Despite the blockade, maritime tracking data indicated that some vessels departing Iranian ports had continued operations, navigating through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian sources also reported that commercial shipping activities from southern ports had persisted, with vessels departing for various international destinations within the past 24 hours.
The development raises concerns over potential disruptions to global trade routes, particularly in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways, which are critical for international shipping and energy supplies.
