The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspected armed robbers and recovered a toy pistol during a patrol operation in Ibadan.
The suspects were apprehended by officers from the Bodija Market Division while carrying out a routine stop-and-search operation along Awolowo Road, Bodija. According to the police, all three individuals are residents of the Gbaremu area of Ibadan.
A thorough search conducted on the suspects led to the discovery of a toy pistol, which had been concealed in a black bag, as well as six mobile phones believed to have been obtained from their victims.
During questioning, the suspects reportedly confessed to committing robberies against unsuspecting members of the public, admitting that they had dispossessed victims of their valuables. Details from the police indicate that the individuals targeted pedestrians and other passersby, taking advantage of public spaces where law enforcement presence was minimal.
The police have confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of their activities. Authorities are also working to identify additional accomplices who may have been involved in the robberies.
Officials emphasized the importance of vigilance among residents and assured the public that the police are stepping up patrols in high-risk areas to curb criminal activities. They also called on community members to report suspicious behavior promptly, reinforcing the role of citizen cooperation in maintaining safety and security in Ibadan.
The recovery of the toy pistol highlights a growing trend of criminals using imitation firearms to intimidate victims, prompting law enforcement agencies to stress the need for caution while navigating public spaces. The police have urged residents to remain calm but alert, assuring them that law enforcement will continue proactive measures to prevent crime and apprehend offenders.
Investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected as the police work to bring the suspects and any accomplices to justice.
