The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested an Abuja-based house agent, Hajia Adama Adamu, over an alleged property fraud involving N288 million.

The suspect was reportedly apprehended by operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate following a petition filed by a complainant.

According to details made available by the anti-graft agency, Adamu allegedly collected the sum of N288 million from Alhaji Tanko Yawale under the guise of facilitating the purchase of a property located at House 31, Haile Selassie Street, Asokoro, Abuja.

The commission said the transaction became suspicious after the suspect allegedly failed to provide valid documentation for the property after receiving the payment.

Investigators further noted that the complainant became concerned when repeated efforts to obtain the necessary property documents proved unsuccessful, and the suspect allegedly became evasive.

The case has drawn renewed attention to the persistent issue of property-related fraud in Nigeria’s real estate sector, especially in high-value areas such as Abuja, where fraudulent agents often present themselves as legitimate intermediaries.

Authorities have continued to warn members of the public to carry out proper verification of property ownership, title documents, and legal status before making payments for land or housing transactions.

The EFCC has in recent months intensified its clampdown on land and housing scams as part of broader efforts to tackle financial crimes and protect unsuspecting investors and home seekers.
