The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has assured residents of a free, fair, and credible local government and councillorship elections scheduled for December 29, 2026.
Chairman of the commission, Babatunde Adeniyi, gave the assurance during a courtesy visit from executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Oyo State Correspondents’ Chapel, led by its chairman, Yinka Adeniran.
Adeniyi said the commission would strictly follow electoral laws and guidelines to ensure transparency and acceptance by political parties and the electorate. “All the processes leading to the election are in top gear. We will comply with all relevant laws and deliver a credible poll that will be acceptable to all,” he stated.
He called for the cooperation of the media and political parties to help address voter apathy, which is often associated with local government elections in the state. Adeniyi also commended the media for its previous support and pledged to strengthen the partnership to ensure a successful electoral process.
OYSIEC Commissioner Remi Ayoade also urged all political parties to participate fully in the upcoming elections.
Yinka Adeniran praised Adeniyi’s background in unionism, noting that it would bring positive change to the commission. He assured the commission of the NUJ Chapel’s support in ensuring a credible and fair election that deepens grassroots democracy in Oyo State.
