Passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries on Monday morning following an incident involving a train operating on the busy Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, which forced the service to halt midway through its journey.

The passenger train, which departed Kaduna and was bound for Abuja, failed to arrive at its destination as scheduled after the disruption occurred along the rail line connecting the Federal Capital Territory with Kaduna State.

Passengers on board recounted that the incident happened unexpectedly, triggering panic and confusion among those inside the coaches. According to accounts from those present, a loud bang was heard shortly before the train suddenly jolted and came to an abrupt stop. The violent movement reportedly caused several passengers to be thrown off their seats, while others were pushed against seats and metal fittings inside the compartments.

The sudden halt created a moment of fear and uncertainty, as passengers tried to understand what had happened. Some travellers sustained injuries during the jolt, with a number of them suffering cuts, bruises and other minor wounds after the impact. Several passengers were seen attending to one another while efforts were made to restore calm inside the train.

Initial indications suggested that the Abuja-bound train was involved in a collision with another train along the same corridor. The development led to a temporary suspension of operations on the route while the situation was being assessed.

Passengers said the train remained stationary for a period before the journey resumed slowly toward Kubwa, an area located on the outskirts of Abuja. During the pause, passengers waited anxiously inside the coaches as railway personnel worked to address the situation and ensure that it was safe for the train to continue its movement.

The Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor is one of the busiest railway routes in the country, serving thousands of commuters daily and providing an important transportation link between Kaduna State and the Federal Capital Territory. The rail service has become a preferred mode of travel for many passengers due to its relative speed and convenience compared to road transportation along the same route.

Following the incident, railway authorities acknowledged that the situation had occurred and indicated that further details would be made available after a proper assessment of the circumstances surrounding the disruption.

Meanwhile, passengers who experienced the frightening moment expressed relief after the train eventually resumed movement, though many remained shaken by the incident. Some injured passengers were reportedly given basic assistance while the train continued toward its destination.

Railway officials are expected to review the incident and determine the exact cause, as well as evaluate safety measures along the corridor to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The development has once again drawn attention to the importance of maintaining strict operational and safety protocols on one of Nigeria’s most heavily used rail lines.
