Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has assured Nigerians that the military remains in control of the security situation despite renewed terrorist and bandit attacks in the North-East.
Musa gave the assurance on Wednesday in Abuja after a strategic meeting with service chiefs and senior military officers to review operational strategies across different theatres of operation nationwide.
According to him, the meeting was convened to assess the current security situation and strengthen ongoing efforts to defeat terrorists and other criminal elements threatening national security.
He acknowledged that the Armed Forces had suffered some casualties during operations but stressed that terrorists and bandits had recorded heavier losses. Musa noted that several commanders of the criminal groups had been eliminated and their assets destroyed in recent military offensives.
The defence minister urged Nigerians to continue supporting the Armed Forces and other security agencies, stressing that tackling insecurity requires collective efforts from both government and citizens.
He also warned against the spread of misinformation on social media, noting that unverified reports could undermine security operations and affect the morale of troops.
Musa appealed to media organisations to avoid amplifying terrorist propaganda through the circulation of videos and materials produced by criminal groups.
He further urged citizens to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies and warned that anyone providing information or logistics support to terrorists would be treated as an accomplice.
The minister also thanked Bola Tinubu for his continued support to the Armed Forces and congratulated the new Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, assuring him of close collaboration in tackling the country’s security challenges.
