US Embassy cancels Abuja visa appointments over protest fears

The United States Embassy in Abuja has cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, 2026, citing a high risk of protests in the Federal Capital Territory.

In a statement on its website, the embassy warned of “potential demonstrations” related to the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran, and advised American citizens in Abuja to remain indoors.

The notice stated: “Previous protests by some groups have resulted in violent clashes between the groups and Nigerian security forces. The Embassy strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday, March 4.”

The advisory comes after reports that U.S.-Israel airstrikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, along with several senior Iranian officials. Tehran reportedly retaliated by launching multiple missiles targeting U.S. military bases in Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia.

The conflict, which began over the weekend with coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes, has now entered its fifth day with tensions showing no immediate signs of easing.
