Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have rescued a 20-year-old suspect, Garuba Aminu, from an angry mob after a suspected human leg was reportedly discovered in his possession in Oyo town.
The incident occurred at about 8:00 a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, in the busy commercial area of Oroki. The suspect was said to have disguised himself as a scavenger, moving around the area with a large sack filled with waste plastic bottles.
According to police authorities, vigilant members of the community became suspicious of the young man’s movements and unusual conduct. Their concerns reportedly prompted them to stop and question him. During a search of the sack he was carrying, residents allegedly discovered a severed lower right leg suspected to be that of a human being concealed among the plastic waste.
The discovery quickly attracted a crowd, and tensions escalated as some individuals allegedly attempted to take matters into their own hands. Upon receiving a distress report, a joint patrol team of the police, working alongside other security agencies, swiftly mobilized to the scene.
On arrival, officers met an agitated mob that had gathered with the intention of lynching the suspect. The police team intervened promptly, dispersing the crowd and rescuing the suspect from imminent harm. The suspected human body part was recovered at the scene and secured as an exhibit for forensic examination and further investigative procedures.
The spokesperson of the command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed that the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a discreet and comprehensive investigation aimed at determining the origin of the severed limb and the circumstances surrounding the case.
The command commended members of the public whose vigilance led to the detection of the suspect, noting that community participation plays a critical role in crime prevention and control. However, residents were strongly cautioned against engaging in mob justice or taking the law into their own hands, as such actions are unlawful and could hinder proper investigation and prosecution.
The police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state and assured the public that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses. Residents were also encouraged to remain security conscious and promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
