Afrobeats singer Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has sparked widespread debate after calling for severe punishment for rapists amid growing concerns over sexual assault in Nigeria.
In a post shared on X on Tuesday night, the singer expressed anger over the rising cases of sexual violence, urging both citizens and authorities to take stronger action against perpetrators. She stated that rapists should face extreme punishment, including castration and death.
Her remarks quickly generated mixed reactions online, with some supporting her strong stance against sexual violence, while others criticised her call for capital punishment. Some critics also argued that attention should be given to cases involving false accusations.
Responding to the backlash, Simi clarified that her comments were driven by concern for victims of sexual assault. She emphasised that many women live in fear due to the prevalence of sexual violence and stressed the importance of addressing the issue without dismissing victims’ experiences.
The singer also urged men to hold one another accountable and to actively discourage behaviours that enable sexual violence, noting that creating a safer environment requires collective responsibility.
Her comments have continued to fuel conversations nationwide about sexual assault, justice, and the appropriate legal and social responses to such crimes.
