The President of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially announced the commencement of Ramadan 1447AH following the sighting of the crescent moon.

The announcement followed verified and authenticated reports of moon sightings from various locations across Nigeria. The confirmation was conveyed on behalf of the Sultan by Shehu Abubakar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi.

According to the Sultanate Council, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, marks the first day of Ramadan, the holy month during which Muslims observe fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection.

Meanwhile, Christians across the country have also begun the Lenten season, with members of the Catholic Church observing Ash Wednesday, which signifies the start of the 40-day period of fasting and penitence leading to Easter.
