The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the full rollout of its Digital Certificate Services System, known as WAEC DigiCert, across all its five member countries, marking a significant step toward modernising certificate access and verification.
The digital platform, which is available through both mobile and web applications, is designed to provide candidates and stakeholders with easy, secure and convenient access to electronic versions of WAEC certificates. The system is being implemented in The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, ensuring that candidates across West Africa can benefit from faster and more efficient certificate services.
According to WAEC, the DigiCert system enables candidates to access, request, confirm and securely share digital copies of their certificates with educational institutions, employers and other relevant organisations anywhere in the world. This development is expected to greatly simplify the process of certificate verification, particularly for candidates seeking admission into higher institutions or applying for employment locally and internationally.
The council explained that the digital platform also provides solutions to long-standing challenges faced by candidates, including the recovery of lost examination numbers. With the new system, candidates who have misplaced their details can easily retrieve their records without going through lengthy administrative procedures.
WAEC emphasised that the digital certificates are highly secure and come with built-in verification features to guarantee authenticity. This is expected to help reduce cases of certificate forgery and ensure that institutions and employers can verify credentials quickly and confidently.
In addition to improving security, the system is designed to reduce the delays, stress and administrative bottlenecks associated with the traditional process of certificate issuance and collection. Candidates will no longer need to travel long distances or wait extended periods to access their certificates, as the digital platform provides instant access once the required steps are completed.
The council also highlighted the cost-saving benefits of the new system, noting that it will reduce expenses related to physical certificate handling, processing and delivery. By digitising certificate services, WAEC aims to improve efficiency while making its services more accessible to millions of candidates across the region.
Despite the introduction of the digital system, WAEC clarified that physical certificates will continue to be printed and issued as usual. The digital platform is intended to complement, not replace, the traditional certificate format, giving candidates the flexibility to use either option depending on their needs.
The introduction of WAEC DigiCert reflects the council’s broader commitment to adopting modern technology to improve service delivery, enhance transparency and provide more convenient solutions for candidates and stakeholders. It is also expected to strengthen trust in WAEC certificates globally by ensuring faster, easier and more reliable verification processes.
Candidates and members of the public are encouraged to explore the digital platform through the official mobile application or online portal to take full advantage of the new certificate services.
