The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State is nearing a final resolution, following decisive intervention by President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja after inspecting ongoing FCT projects, Wike praised Tinubu’s leadership, describing the president as a unifying figure whose authority carries significant weight in resolving political disputes.

“I believe that by the grace of God, this will be the last time the president will be bothered with this issue and that this will be the last time the Rivers people will need to hear this kind of discord,” Wike said.

Tinubu’s intervention seen as decisive

Wike emphasised that Tinubu’s involvement was crucial in easing tensions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly, which has been at the centre of the political conflict.

He described the president’s directive as binding, stating:

“The president is the father of the nation, and when a father speaks, his children must listen and do the needful to ensure peace and progress.”

The minister expressed optimism that both the Rivers State House of Assembly and Governor Fubara would comply with the agreement reached during the presidential mediation.

“I am confident that the House of Assembly will do what they are supposed to do, and the governor will also carry out the acts required of him to ensure this peace is sustainable,” he added.

Tinubu brokers peace meeting

The crisis escalated after lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, widely believed to be loyal to Wike, began impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.

To resolve the standoff, President Tinubu convened a high-level peace meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, bringing together Wike, Governor Fubara, and other key political stakeholders.

Focus shifts to stability and progress

Wike stressed that political stability and development must now take priority over disagreements.

“The most important thing is for Rivers State to move forward, and we are grateful to Mr President for his tireless commitment to ensuring that we reach this understanding,” he said.

The minister’s remarks signal growing optimism that presidential mediation may finally bring an end to months of political tension in Rivers State, which has affected governance and raised concerns about stability in the oil-rich region.
