The Federal Government has directed the Federal Character Commission (FCC) to strengthen enforcement of the federal character principle across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to promote fairness, inclusion, and public trust in governance.
The directive was issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during a two-day induction workshop for members of the FCC’s fifth board.
Represented by his Senior Technical Adviser, Prof. Babatunde Bernard, Akume emphasised that the federal character principle is a constitutional requirement and a key tool for national unity.
He said:
-
The principle must be implemented strictly and without compromise.
-
The FCC must ensure fair representation of Nigeria’s diverse regions and groups in federal appointments and institutions.
-
The commission should adopt data-driven monitoring, transparency, and stronger oversight mechanisms.
Akume also urged FCC members to perform their duties with professionalism, fairness, and loyalty to the constitution, noting that public confidence in government depends on how well the principle is enforced.
FCC vows strict enforcement
FCC Chairman, Ayo Omidiran, assured that the new board would not operate on a “business as usual” basis. She said the commission would enforce federal character laws without fear or favour and described the principle as essential for managing Nigeria’s diversity and strengthening national unity.
Gbajabiamila warns against misuse
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, also stressed the importance of balancing inclusion with competence. He warned that the federal character principle must not be used as an excuse for mediocrity but should support fairness alongside professionalism.
Purpose of the workshop
The induction workshop is aimed at:
-
Aligning the vision of the new FCC board
-
Strengthening internal coordination
-
Equipping members with tools to effectively enforce federal character laws
Overall, the Federal Government expects the FCC to play a stronger role in ensuring equitable representation and reinforcing unity across Nigeria’s public institutions.
