FAAN Reduces Cargo Port Charge to N15/kg at Lagos Airport After Stakeholder Talks

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has approved a revised cargo port charge of N15 per kilogram at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following negotiations with cargo handling stakeholders.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, and published on the authority’s official X platform on Tuesday.

The new charge comes after weeks of disagreement between FAAN and Customs Licensed Cargo Agents, who had strongly opposed an earlier proposal to increase the fee to N20 per kilogram.

The dispute had disrupted cargo operations at the airport, forcing FAAN to engage stakeholders in dialogue to reach a compromise and restore normal activities.

According to FAAN, the newly agreed N15 per kilogram charge represents a middle ground between the previously proposed N20 rate and the long-standing N7 per kilogram fee that has been in place since 2008.

The agreement was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Monday, February 9, 2026, at the MMIA Terminal 2 Conference Room. The meeting was chaired by the Director of Cargo Development and Services, Mr. Lekan Thomas.

FAAN noted that the revised tariff is expected to resolve tensions within the cargo sector, reopen affected warehouses, and stabilise operations across the airport’s cargo value chain.

The authority also explained that the adjustment is necessary to support the modernisation of cargo infrastructure while balancing the financial realities of cargo operators.

FAAN added that the move aligns with efforts to improve the ease of doing business at MMIA and ensure sustainable development of airport facilities.
