The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the registration of two new political parties, bringing the total number of registered political parties in Nigeria to 21.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joaish Amupitan, disclosed this during the Commission’s first quarterly meeting with leaders of political parties. He identified the newly registered parties as the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Prof. Amupitan explained that the Democratic Leadership Alliance fulfilled all constitutional and regulatory requirements for political party registration. He added that the National Democratic Congress was registered in compliance with a judgment of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, which directed the Commission to grant the party recognition.
According to the INEC Chairman, certificates of registration will be presented to the two political parties in due course.
The development marks an increase in the number of political parties in the country ahead of preparations for future electoral activities. INEC reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all political parties operate within the framework of the law and in accordance with established guidelines.
