The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied reports that Vice President Kashim Shettima could be replaced as President Bola Tinubu’s candidate for vice governor in the 2027 elections. The party called the claims speculative, false, and baseless.

This response from the party follows growing speculation that the ruling party might reconsider the Muslim-dominated candidate list that secured its victory in the 2023 presidential election.

At the center of the debate was Culture Minister Hannatu Musawa, who had warned against removing Vice President Shettima from the list. She argued that such a move could have political repercussions, particularly in northern Nigeria.

Ms. Musawa stated that political identity and representation play a crucial role in mobilizing voters across the region. She emphasized that the absence of a northern Nigerian Muslim candidate on the list could be problematic. She added that political life in the northern states is deeply rooted in history and political participation, and warned against underestimating the impact of changes to the current political system.

The APC party, in a statement from its national communications secretary Felix Morka, said it was aware of the increasing media attention surrounding an alleged plan to oust the vice president.

The party noted that speculation had recently intensified and names were being mentioned as possible successors to Shettima, but emphasized that these claims were baseless.

“These stories are purely speculative, false, and completely unfounded,” the APC stated, urging the media not to spread rumors and unconfirmed information that could sow division and confusion.

The party also reaffirmed that political activities remain subject to current election laws and regulations, adding that it is not currently holding any discussions regarding its succession or the nomination of a candidate.

According to the APC, its primary focus is currently on government work and supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in implementing the government’s “Renewed Hope” program, including ongoing economic reforms aimed at improving prosperity and living standards.

The party also cautioned ministers, senior officials, and party leaders against making statements that could trigger unnecessary speculation and urged them to concentrate on effective work and promoting the government’s achievements.
