Two prominent traditional leaders of Oyo State, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Olaoye Ghandi were absent from Governor Seyi Makinde’s opening ceremony on Monday, marking the 50th anniversary of the state’s founding.

The ceremony at the Ibadan International Conference Center brought together family members of former governors, traditional and religious leaders, senior government officials, and politicians. Oyo State was formed on February 3, 1976, from the former Western Region; Ibadan is its capital.

The absence of the Alaafin and the Soun raises questions, especially given the recent disagreements over the leadership structure of the Oyo Council of Obas. Governor Makinde recently approved a system of rotating presidencies among the Alaafin, the Olubadan, and the Soun, replacing the long-standing practice of the Alaafin holding the permanent presidency.

While the Olubadan of Ibadan and Chairman of the Council of Obas, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, attended the event along with other monarchs, the Alaafin had previously publicly denied claims that he had agreed to the new arrangement, stating that no such agreement had been reached.

Monday’s ceremony was the first major state event since the announcement of the rotating presidency and the subsequent denials.

The state government had previously unveiled a week-long anniversary program that included religious services, cultural exhibitions, a public lecture, an awards ceremony, and a dinner. Former federal lawmaker Saheed Fijabi is chairing the organizing committee for the celebrations.

At the event, Governor Makinde cut the birthday cake and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to building a stronger and more competitive economy that creates jobs, attracts investment, and provides better opportunities for residents.

He declared that the next 50 years for Oyo State should be characterized by prosperity, justice, dignity, and hope. At the same time, he acknowledged the legacy of past leaders, including former Governor Bola Ige, whose free education policy significantly influenced the values of state governance.

Makinde also highlighted a digital commemorative platform created for the anniversary, where residents share their experiences, illustrating resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and a strong sense of community.

Previously, Fijabi had described this golden jubilee as an opportunity to reflect on the state’s history and reaffirm its commitment to sustainable development. In his speech, Oba Rashidi Ladoja called for honoring past political leaders and the unsung heroes whose contributions laid the foundation for the state’s growth.

Despite the absence of Alaafin and Soun, the governor emphasized that his administration remains committed to inclusive governance, peace, and civic engagement. The anniversary celebrations are ongoing and will culminate in a planned celebration on January 27, 2026.
