Kayode Adeniyi, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the road crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State.

Adeniyi, 47, was charged with manslaughter, reckless driving, and other related offences following the incident, which occurred on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

According to investigators, the crash was caused by excessive speed and wrongful overtaking. The Federal Road Safety Corps had earlier attributed the accident to overspeeding, which reportedly led the vehicle to collide with a stationary truck on the highway.

In a statement issued on Friday, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the case had been adjourned to January 20, 2026.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the Anthony Joshua accident case, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was charged before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on January 2, 2026. The case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026,” the statement said.

Police revealed that Adeniyi, a long-time member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, was discharged from a Lagos hospital late on New Year’s Eve before being taken to Abeokuta, where the court proceedings took place.

Further details indicated that the Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, was travelling well above the permitted speed limit when a tyre reportedly burst during an overtaking manoeuvre near the Danco area of the expressway. The vehicle subsequently lost control and rammed into a truck parked by the roadside and laden with soya beans.

The crash claimed the lives of Joshua’s training staff members, identified as Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
