The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of seven journalists who lost their lives in a fatal road accident in Gombe State.

In a condolence statement issued on Tuesday, jointly signed by the Chairman, Akeem Abas, and Secretary, Temidayo Adu, the council described the incident as a painful loss that has plunged the journalism community across Nigeria into mourning.

According to the statement, the sudden demise of the journalists is not only a major loss to the NUJ Gombe State Council but also to the journalism profession nationwide.

Reports indicated that the journalists died in a lone vehicular crash that occurred on Monday evening in the Gombe South area of the state. They were said to be travelling in a bus to attend the wedding ceremony of a colleague who works with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

Confirming the incident, the Gombe State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samson Kaura, said preliminary findings showed that the crash was fatal.

The Oyo NUJ council commiserated with the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, praying for strength and comfort for all those affected.

“We pray that Almighty God grants the departed eternal rest and gives the NUJ President, the Gombe State Council, and the bereaved families the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement said.

The council also prayed for the speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries in the accident.
