Senate urges NSA to probe fake news on Akpabio’s, Gowon’s deaths

The Senate has directed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to investigate the circulation of false reports alleging the deaths of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.).

The decision followed the consideration of a motion raised during plenary by Senator Titus Zam, who expressed concern over the growing spread of misinformation on social media. He noted that claims of Akpabio’s death in a London hospital were widely circulated online at a time the Senate President was actively presiding over plenary sessions.

Zam also drew attention to a similar rumour concerning General Gowon, which emerged on the same day the former Head of State publicly attended a Christmas carol service in Abuja. He called for a thorough investigation to identify those responsible for originating and spreading the false reports.

In his response, Akpabio described the trend as alarming and increasingly common, citing past instances where individuals were falsely reported dead despite being alive. He subsequently sustained the motion and ordered that the matter be referred to the National Security Adviser for investigation.

The Senate unanimously adopted the resolution through a voice vote.
