The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs has confirmed the appointment of three non-career ambassadors nominated by President Bola Tinubu.
The confirmed nominees are Lateef Kayode Kolawole Are from Ogun State, Aminu Muhammad Dalhatu from Jigawa State, and Emmanuel Ayodele Oke from Oyo State. Their confirmation followed a screening exercise conducted by the committee during a hearing held on Tuesday.
Members of the committee examined the credentials, experience and suitability of the nominees for diplomatic assignments, after which they were approved without objection. The confirmation marks the final stage of the legislative process required for their deployment as ambassadors representing Nigeria’s interests abroad.
The development comes shortly after the Senate confirmed a larger batch of ambassadorial nominees. Last week, the upper chamber screened and approved 68 nominees, made up of both career and non-career diplomats, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic presence across key countries and multilateral institutions.
Among those earlier confirmed were prominent public figures, including a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu; former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode; former presidential aide, Reno Omokri; and former Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau.
The confirmation of the nominees is expected to pave the way for their formal appointment and subsequent posting, as the Federal Government moves to fill vacant ambassadorial positions and reposition Nigeria’s foreign missions to advance diplomatic, economic and strategic interests globally.
