The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign former Minister of Labour and Productivity and ex-Governor of Anambra State, Dr Chris Ngige.

Ngige was picked up from his residence in Asokoro, Abuja, on Wednesday by operatives of the EFCC. According to family members, the arrest was carried out abruptly, with the former governor taken away before he could change out of his pyjamas.

He had previously been granted administrative bail after honouring an invitation from the commission for questioning over undisclosed matters. Ngige was said to have cooperated fully with investigators, maintained communication with the agency, and complied with all bail conditions, including the submission of his travel documents.

The former minister had planned a medical trip to the United States but was unable to proceed after misplacing his passport while in transit through the United Kingdom. He later obtained temporary travel documents from the Nigerian High Commission in London to facilitate his return to the country.

Upon arriving in Abuja, Ngige reportedly prepared a letter to formally notify the EFCC of the circumstances surrounding his missing passport and his delayed report to the agency. However, he had not submitted the letter before operatives arrived at his home.

Ngige expressed surprise at the manner of his arrest, maintaining that he had not violated any of the bail terms and had remained cooperative throughout the investigation.
