Barring any last-minute changes, the Senate is expected to commence a three-day national security summit today, aimed at addressing the rising insecurity across the country.

A statement from the Office of the Senate President noted that the summit will review and harmonize recommendations gathered from earlier zonal hearings conducted across the six geopolitical zones.

According to the statement, traditional rulers also participated in the hearings, based on the belief that security challenges must be tackled from the grassroots.

The Senate highlighted that warnings about escalating violence are not new, recalling that concerns over widespread killings were previously raised on the Senate floor in May 2025.

The statement stressed the need for Nigerians to pay greater attention to homegrown solutions rather than relying on external interventions, noting that insecurity affects citizens of all religions and backgrounds.

Quoting Senate President Godswill Akpabio, it reiterated that the loss of any life—whether civilian or military—inflicts deep pain on families and underscores the urgency of finding lasting solutions.
