The Kebbi State Government has commenced the payment of N750 million in compensation to property owners affected by the construction of the N4 billion Gwandu Township Road in Gwandu Local Government Area.
The long-anticipated project, which residents have demanded for over a decade, will connect Kele to the Bye-pass area of Gwandu town and is expected to boost infrastructure and economic activities within the community.
The compensation exercise was officially launched on Thursday at the palace of the Sarkin Gabas of Gwandu. Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Compensation Payment Committee, Alhaji Aliyu Maude-Gwandu, described the payment as a major milestone toward the commencement of construction.
According to him, previous administrations were unable to execute the project due to the high compensation costs involved.
“N750 million has been allocated for compensation, while N3.2 billion will cover the construction work, bringing the total project cost to about N4 billion,” he said.
Maude-Gwandu added that construction is scheduled to begin one month after the compensation process is completed. He urged beneficiaries to handle their certified cheques carefully, noting that lost cheques would not be replaced.
The Chairman of Gwandu Local Government, Alhaji Atiku Ahmad-Mandiya, said the committee had physically inspected and verified all affected properties before determining compensation amounts. He praised Governor Nasir Idris for fulfilling one of his campaign promises to the people.
A former Commissioner and Chairman of the Kebbi Contributory Healthcare Management Agency, Alhaji Hassan Shalla-Gwandu, expressed optimism that the road would enhance economic growth in the area. He also reminded beneficiaries to keep their cheques safe.
In his remarks, the Sarkin Gabas of Gwandu, Alhaji Zayyanu Haruna-Rashid, thanked the state government for remembering the community.
“We appreciate the governor for fulfilling his promises. When Gwandu says yes, their yes is yes,” he said.
