The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) in Akwa Ibom State has confirmed the deaths of two inmates following an electricity transformer explosion near the Uyo Custodial Centre approximately two weeks ago. The State Controller of Corrections, Frank Okonkwo, described the incident as tragic, noting that two correctional officers were also injured and several electrical appliances within the facility were destroyed.

Okonkwo explained that the explosion occurred when a nearby transformer malfunctioned, causing a high-voltage cable to snap and fall within a section of the custodial centre, leading to a total power outage.

“Officials from the electricity distribution company indicated that the explosion was caused by excessive voltage. The surge destroyed our electrical appliances, including computers, and affected our barracks and the official residence of the officer in charge,” he said.

The Controller confirmed that two inmates were seriously affected. They were attended to by the medical team and rushed to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. One of the deceased was facing trial for conspiracy and kidnapping, while the other was charged with armed robbery.

Families of the deceased have been contacted, with one family already completing procedures to retrieve the body. However, the corpses will only be released after the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.

Okonkwo recalled that the same transformer had previously developed a fault a few years ago without causing casualties, and he urged relevant authorities to address the recurring issue to prevent future incidents.

He also highlighted plans by the Command to implement an empowerment programme for rehabilitated inmates who have undergone skill acquisition training. Initially targeting 30 inmates due to funding limitations, the initiative will provide start-up support for skills such as tailoring, carpentry, barbing, and welding, acquired at various custodial centres including Uyo, Ikot Abasi, Ikot Ekpene, and Eket.

“This programme is designed to help reformed inmates reintegrate into society as productive members and reduce the likelihood of reoffending,” Okonkwo said.
