President Bola Tinubu’s delegation, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has begun consultations with the United Kingdom authorities over the continued imprisonment of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.
The discussions focus on the possibility of transferring Ekweremadu to Nigeria to serve the remainder of his jail term.
Upon arrival in London, the Nigerian delegation met with UK Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Justice and is expected to hold additional meetings with other key officials on the matter.
Confirming the development, Alkasim AbdulKadir, spokesperson for the Minister of Foreign Affairs, said consultations are ongoing.
“Consultations are still ongoing with UK authorities on the matter. An appeal for prisoner exchange for him to serve the remainder of his term in Nigeria has been tabled before the United Kingdom authorities,” AbdulKadir stated.
The move marks a renewed diplomatic effort by the Nigerian government to negotiate Ekweremadu’s transfer following his conviction in the UK for organ trafficking.
