The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed reports alleging that it issued a directive restricting Senior Secondary School students to specific subjects for the forthcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Council described the reports circulating on social media as false, misleading, and unfounded, urging schools, parents, and the general public to disregard them.

WAEC clarified that it had not released any new policy altering the existing examination structure or subject options available to students preparing for the 2026 WASSCE.

According to the statement, the Council has no authority to develop or modify school curricula, as that responsibility rests solely with the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education and other relevant regulatory bodies.

“WAEC wishes to categorically distance itself from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject. The Council did not issue any directive nor restrict students’ choices of subjects for the 2026 WASSCE,” the statement said.

The examination body explained that its role is limited to conducting examinations based on the government-approved curriculum, adding that it operates strictly within established national policies and international examination standards.

WAEC reaffirmed that any change to the education curriculum or examination guidelines would follow due process and would be formally communicated to all stakeholders before implementation.

The Council further advised schools and candidates to rely only on official communications from WAEC through its accredited channels, warning that false information from unofficial sources could cause unnecessary confusion and panic.

Established in 1952, WAEC is responsible for conducting standardized examinations across five West African countries—Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia. The Council reiterated its commitment to maintaining transparency, credibility, and fairness in all its examinations.

“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are hereby advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official statements from the Council for accurate information regarding the 2026 WASSCE,” the statement added.

WAEC assured parents and students that no candidate would be disadvantaged in the forthcoming examination cycle and emphasized that its operations remain guided by professionalism and global best practices.
