The World Health Organisation (WHO) has successfully evacuated a group of critically ill and injured children from the Gaza Strip, marking the first such operation since the ceasefire began two weeks ago.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on X (formerly Twitter) that 41 children, accompanied by 145 relatives and caregivers, were safely transported out of Gaza to receive specialized medical care.

A WHO spokesperson confirmed that all the evacuees were children but withheld the names of the destination countries due to operational and security concerns.

Dr. Tedros noted that about 15,000 patients in Gaza are still awaiting approval to leave the enclave for medical treatment, stressing the need for accelerated humanitarian access.

He urged nations to “show solidarity” by supporting medical evacuations and facilitating the opening of all possible routes to ensure the safe transfer of critically ill civilians from the conflict zone.

Medical evacuations from Gaza remain subject to permits from Israeli authorities, who control border crossings. Although a ceasefire has been in effect since October 10, local reports indicate sporadic violations by both sides.
