The Acting Rector of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, Olorunwa Adegun, has called on stakeholders to protect and promote polytechnic education in Nigeria, stressing its vital role in driving technological advancement and national development.

Speaking ahead of the institution’s forthcoming convocation ceremony, Adegun emphasized that polytechnic education is central to innovation and practical skill development, which are key to industrial and economic progress.

“The same law that establishes the polytechnic system defines what polytechnic education stands for. The challenge has been in aligning both for effective implementation. In 2020, about 60 universities in China were converted to polytechnics, and today, China leads in global technological production. Until we embrace technical and hands-on learning, we will remain stagnant,” he said.

Adegun revealed that the upcoming convocation would mark a historic moment for the institution, as it would feature the graduation of about 25,000 students covering 12 academic sessions. According to him, the ceremony represents a major breakthrough after years of delay caused by financial constraints, industrial disputes, and loss of accreditation in some programmes.

“This is a jinx-breaking exercise for us. Convocation should be an annual event — it’s the peak of academic achievement and a symbolic transition into the labour market. For the institution, it is also a performance indicator. Consistent convocation ceremonies enhance institutional reputation,” he explained.

He expressed optimism that the event would now become an annual tradition, ensuring continuity and stability in the institution’s academic calendar.

Adegun commended the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for his support in reviving the polytechnic. He noted that the governor’s intervention, including the payment of outstanding salary arrears, increased monthly subvention, and approval for the long-delayed convocation, had restored confidence among staff and students and repositioned the institution for growth.
