The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, marked his 51st birthday on Friday with heartfelt prayers for Nigeria and renewed calls for unity, peace, and national development.

In a message of gratitude, the Ooni expressed profound appreciation to Almighty God for the gift of life, divine guidance, and the strength to continue his mission of service to humanity. Reflecting on his journey so far, he described it as one ordained by purpose and anchored on a deep sense of responsibility to his people, the Yoruba nation, and Nigeria at large.

Oba Ogunwusi, who ascended the throne of his forefathers in 2015, emphasized that leadership—particularly from traditional institutions—must go beyond ceremonial roles to become active agents of national cohesion and development. He reaffirmed his belief that the destiny of Nigeria lies in the collective will of its citizens to work together in unity and peace.

“Nigeria is a nation richly blessed with both human and natural resources,” the Ooni said. “Our progress depends on our ability to harness these blessings through cooperation, tolerance, and a shared sense of purpose. I pray for enduring peace in our country, wisdom for our leaders, and prosperity for all sons and daughters of the Oduduwa race around the world.”

He urged traditional rulers and Yoruba communities across the globe to rise above divisions and to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood that have long united the people. According to him, unity remains a powerful tool for overcoming challenges and achieving the collective aspirations of the Yoruba nation and Nigeria as a whole.

The monarch also called for a renewed commitment to cultural preservation, noting that African traditions, values, and identity are vital for promoting social harmony and national rebirth. “Our culture is not just a reflection of our past,” he said, “it is a guiding light for our future. When we embrace our heritage, we find strength, wisdom, and a deeper sense of belonging.”

Reaffirming his dedication to youth empowerment, education, and women’s participation in leadership, Oba Ogunwusi emphasized that these pillars are essential for building a balanced and progressive society. He stated that the future of the Yoruba nation—and indeed of Nigeria—depends on how well the younger generation is guided, supported, and inspired to lead with integrity and vision.

The Ooni extended heartfelt appreciation to all sons and daughters of Oduduwa at home and abroad for their continuous loyalty, prayers, and efforts toward preserving the Yoruba legacy. He encouraged them to remain steadfast in upholding the values of peace, love, mutual respect, and unity.

“As we celebrate this milestone,” he concluded, “let us rededicate ourselves to the ideals of nation-building and the preservation of our cultural heritage. Our diversity is our strength, and together, we can make Nigeria a land of peace, progress, and pride for all.”
