The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Trustmark, a new initiative aimed at curbing online fraud, identity theft, scams, and forgery in Nigeria’s digital business space.
Unveiled in Abuja by the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Malam Kashifu Inuwa, the Trustmark is designed to promote trust, transparency, and credibility in online transactions.
Developed in collaboration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Trustmark will serve as a certification seal for legitimate online businesses operating within Nigeria. The seal will be displayed on websites, documents, and platforms to verify authenticity and reassure consumers.
Inuwa explained that the initiative responds to global concerns about Nigeria’s online reputation and the rise in e-commerce scams. He highlighted common cases such as undelivered goods and fraudulent online vendors, noting that the Trustmark will help rebuild confidence in the country’s digital economy.
The project is also supported by the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and the National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA). It will be available to both public and private sector entities with online operations, and certification will be renewed annually to maintain standards.
While optional, the certification will come at a cost determined by business size and sector. A registration portal is set to open soon for interested businesses.
The initiative is expected to foster a safer, more credible, and globally competitive digital business environment in Nigeria.
