Nigerian music star Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made history by becoming the first female African artist to sell over 10 million units of a single in the United States.
Her milestone comes through the success of “Wait For U”, a chart-topping collaboration with American rappers Future and Drake. According to data from Chart Data, the track has now surpassed 10 million in unit sales, making it eligible for a RIAA Diamond certification in the U.S.
This achievement places Tems as the second African artist overall to hit this mark, following Wizkid, who reached the milestone with his feature on Drake’s “One Dance.”
With this feat, Tems also becomes the top-selling female African artist in U.S. history. Her growing list of RIAA certifications includes several of her solo and collaborative tracks such as “Essence,” “Free Mind,” “Higher,” “Me & U,” and “Found,” which have earned Gold, Platinum, and multi-Platinum status.
From global features to solo hits, Tems continues to break barriers and elevate African music on the world stage.
