The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the nationwide strike following the failure of a reconciliation meeting convened by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, aimed at resolving the dispute between the union and Dangote Refinery.

The meeting, held on Monday, ended in deadlock after both sides failed to reach an agreement on the unionisation of tanker drivers employed at the refinery.

NUPENG President, Williams Akporeha, stated that the union had no option but to persist with industrial action. He accused Dangote management of rejecting established oil and gas unions and instead claiming to have formed an alternative workers’ association.

Akporeha further alleged that the Dangote Refinery’s representative, Sayyu Dantata, walked out of the meeting in protest.

The labour leader also alleged that the Dangote refinery created an alternative drivers’ association to weaken NUPENG, describing the move as illegal.
