STATE POLICE BILL PASSES SECOND READING AT HOUSE OF REPS

The House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill to provide for the establishment of state police in the country.

The bill which is being sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu and 14 others, seeks to pave the way for states to establish their own police units.

As lawmakers took turns to contribute to the debate on the floor of the House during Tuesday’s plenary, Mr Kalu who stood in for the Speaker during the plenary, Abbas Tajudeen, urged members of the house to look beyond political ambitions and think about the interests and safety of Nigerians and Nigeria.

In his own contribution, Babajimi Benson(APC, Lagos)  argued that State Police should be created to address the internal security challenges as the current 400,000 police strength is grossly inadequate to take care of over 200m people in the country.
