A tragic incident has claimed the life of a young Ghanaian footballer, Dominic Frimpong, following an armed robbery attack on his team while returning from an away match.

Frimpong, who played for Berekum Chelsea FC, was part of a squad travelling back after a league fixture when their bus was ambushed by heavily armed assailants. The attackers, described as masked men carrying guns and assault rifles, reportedly opened fire on the team’s vehicle, causing panic and forcing players and officials to flee for safety into nearby bushes.

The attack occurred at night along a highway in the Ashanti Region, an area known for intercity travel. During the chaos, Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries. He was rushed to a medical facility, but despite efforts to save him, he later died from his wounds.

Authorities confirmed that the assailants also robbed individuals during the incident, with at least one victim losing a significant sum of money. The attack has raised fresh concerns about the safety of athletes and teams travelling for matches, particularly at night on major routes.

The Ghanaian football community has been thrown into mourning following the young player’s death. Described as a promising and dedicated talent, Frimpong had been steadily building his career and gaining recognition for his performances on the pitch.

At just 20 years old, he had recently joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Stars FC, where he was seeking more playing opportunities. During his time with the club, he featured in several matches and contributed goals, showing glimpses of his potential and commitment to the sport.

His sudden death has been widely described as a huge loss, not only to his club but to football in Ghana as a whole. Teammates, officials, and fans have expressed shock and grief over the incident, remembering him as a hardworking and passionate player with a bright future ahead.

Security agencies have launched investigations into the attack, with efforts ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible. The incident has also intensified calls for improved security measures to protect sports teams and other travellers on highways.

As tributes continue to pour in, Frimpong is being remembered for his dedication, humility, and love for the game—qualities that endeared him to teammates and supporters alike. His death serves as a painful reminder of the risks faced on the roads and the need for stronger measures to ensure safety across the region.
